Leather Bands & Strips
Leather bands and strips are precut, ready-to-use lengths of leather for belts, dog collars, bag straps and general leathercraft. We stock four main types, veg tan, buffalo, top grain and layered "Specials" leather, each suited to a different look and level of firmness, in widths from 10 to 40 mm and thicknesses from 2 to 4 mm.
Veg tan leather strips
Our veg tan leather strips are undyed, full grain and tanned using natural tannins rather than chrome. This makes them ideal for carving, embossing or dyeing yourself, and they develop a rich patina with age and handling, the classic choice for belts and saddlery-style projects.
Buffalo leather strips
Our buffalo leather strips are a heavier, full grain leather with a distinctive pull-up effect, giving a lighter tone where the leather is stretched or bent. Thicker and more rugged than standard cowhide, buffalo leather is a strong choice for belts and straps that need to handle daily wear.
Top grain leather strips
Our top grain leather strips are corrected grain: the surface is buffed smooth and an artificial grain is stamped on for a uniform look, nearly as durable as full grain but with a cleaner, more consistent finish. Soft on one side, smooth and slightly matt on the other, and made from 100% cowhide.
Specials
Our Specials range covers layered and construction variants that don't fit the standard categories, worth a look if you want something a little different from a single-layer strip.
Sizes and buying options
Widths run from 10 to 40 mm and thickness from roughly 2 to 4 mm, depending on the leather type. Need a specific length? Straps are sold precut or by the metre. If you're not fussy about exact colour and width, our mixed leather strap packages are a lower-cost way to build up a stock of offcuts for smaller projects.
Finish your project
Pair your leather strip with a belt buckle for a finished belt, or a buckle and snap hook for a collar or lead. Looking for an oil-treated alternative instead? See our greased leather range, and for cutting, punching and finishing, check our leather tools
